How To Authorise and De-Authorise devices on your Sony Reader Store account

Authorisation is the process of linking your ReaderStore account with your Sony Reader or other mobile device, such as your Tablet or Mobile to allow eBooks purchased through the ReaderStore to be transferred to those devices.

For each account, you can authorise up to 6 devices. If you want to add a 7th device, you'll need to de-authorise one of the previous 6 first.

Orange Prize 2012 shortlist announced

The seventeenth-annual Orange Prize for Fiction has announced its 2012 shortlist. The international award celebrates excellence, originality and accessibility in women’s writing throughout the world. The shortlisted authors are:

How To manage your eBook library

With the huge quantity of paid and free eBooks available, it's easy to suddenly find yourself with a Reader^TM Library full of disorganised content. Here are some tips for organising and managing your eBooks in the Sony Reader^TMsoftware.

1.) Delete unwanted eBooks

First of all, consider whether you actually want all those eBooks. Sure, it can seem like a treasure trove when you find the entire back catalogue of Jane Austen or Plato's Republic in Italian, but do you actually want to read them? Sure, you can fill your Library and Reader to the brim (and it doesn't get any heavier to carry around!), but you don't have to. Delete any titles that you think are just taking up space. Simply locate the books in your library and select them so they have a dark red rectangle around them:

Then click on the 'More Actions' --> Remove button along the bottom-left of the screen:

2.) Sort your eBooks

View the titles in list mode by clicking on the right option in the lower-right of the Reader^TMsoftware window: . You'll see that there are columns for Title, Author, Status, Date Added, etc. You can select and drag these columns around to suit how you want to see the information. Also, you can expand or contract the width of the columns by dragging on the edges of the column. When you click on a column, you sort the eBook contents by that column's category. For example, clicking on 'Author' will allow you to view the eBooks in alphabetical or reverse alphabetical order by author's name.

You can also sort in thumbnail mode using the drop-down menu in the upper-right part of the screen: .

Do bear in mind that, depending on their source, the eBook files may have inaccurate or missing information in some of the fields which will cause them to sort in unexpected ways.

3.) Identify your favourites

Select eBooks and then select in the bottom of the Books screen. The thumbnails acquire a heart symbol: . You can then see your favourites in the dark red Favourites tab.

4.) Put the books into collections... and sync them

The 'Collections' feature allows you to group your books in a way that is useful to you. Select the Tab along the dark red bar and then click and give the collection a name. If you want to rename a collection, select the collection and choose 'Rename' from the 'More Actions' button at the bottom of the screen. To add eBooks to a Collection, just select the titles and select then select the Collection name. You can add eBooks to multiple collections. Double-clicking on the Collection will allow you to see its contents.

When you sync your device with the library, you will be given the option to sync your collections individually. This could be very useful if you don't want to move the entire Library onto the device.

Once synced, you can access Collections from the Home Screen of your device.

Consider these kind of collections:

Collections of eBooks by the same author. This would be especially useful if the authors names were excluded from the Author field (see sorting, above).
If you are studying, create a collection for your text books and another for books you want to read for enjoyment.
Separate books by genre or language.
Perhaps you and your spouse or children have different tastes in books? Create a collection for each of you before you go on holiday.

How To get eBook files onto your Sony Reader Wifi ® (a.k.a. PRS-T1)

Once you learn how to transfer eBooks and other files from the Reader^TMsoftware to the device, you will find it simple and enjoyable.

1.) First, you need to have the Sony Reader^TMsoftware installed on your computer--either a Windows PC or a Mac. You can read the system requirements for your computer and download the software here. You will be guided through the installation process. It is very similar to the installation process for other programs you may have experienced.

2.) Download some eBook files that you want to transfer to your Reader^TM. You can get these from various free and paid sources. Check out other tutorials in this section for suggestions on where to find eBooks. Be sure to choose ePub, PDF or Text file formats to download. [If you download a Kindle format eBook it will not work on your Sony Reader^TM.]

3.) Launch the Reader^TM software on your computer. You will see that it has My Library and Store at the top and underneath a dark red bar with several file types listed:

4.) Locate the eBook files you've downloaded on your computer. Choose 'Books' from the dark red menu bar and then select and drag the files into thesoftware. You will see a little plus sign appear near your cursor when the files are ready to be successfully transferred. The transfer of files may take a few minutes depending on the number of files you've dragged-and-dropped and how much processing speed your computer has.

5.) When the eBooks are successfully transferred, they will appear in My Library in a list or as individual icons. You can change the size and style of the display using these buttons in the lower right of the screen:

Some eBook files include cover images, so you may see thumbnail images of the book cover. Some eBooks files may just have the title typed in text or no cover at all:

6.) Using the USB cable that came with your Reader^TM, connect the device to your computer. Plug the small USB end into the base of your Reader^TM, and plug the standard USB end into a spare USB port on your computer.

If you reader is not fully charged, plugging it in to your computer will start to charge the device.

7.) The Reader^TMsoftware will detect that your Reader^TM is plugged in, and the icon for it will appear in the upper bar of the software, next to the Store icon:

When you click on the Reader icon, a new 'Sync' button will also appear in the Reader^TMsoftware screen at the end of the dark red bar.

8.) When the Reader^TM device detects that it is connected to the computer, you will see a 'USB connected screen:

Click on the 'Data Transfer Mode' button on the screen of the Reader^TM.

9.) Next, click on the Sync tab on the computer screen. You will be given 'Sync Settings' options on the left-hand part of the screen about which type of files you want to 'sync' on to the Reader^TM. Since you have dragged your eBook files into the 'Books' category, you should ensure that the 'Books' tickbox is ticked. You will see in brackets the number of 'Books' that will be transferred.

The right-hand side shows you how much space is available on your Reader^TM. In future, you may need to delete some books in order to make room for new ones to be added.

10.) Press the 'Sync Now' button on the software, and the files will be transferred from the software on your computer to the device. Be sure to allow the transfer to finish before unplugging either end of the USB cable.

11.) You should see your titles appearing as ' Recently Added books' on the Home screen of your the Reader^TM. If there were cover thumbnails included in the files, then these will also appear on the screen of your reader.

Congratulations! You're ready to start reading!

The Book List Challenge

According to the BBC, there are 100 “must read” books, from classics to children’s books, to current best sellers. The BBC believes that the average person will only read six books off this list in their entire lives!

Why not take a look through the list, and see which ones you have already read (watching any movie adaptations doesn’t count!), and for the ones you haven’t, why not download them onto your Reader?! You may well be pleasantly surprised at the brilliance and joy of such a diverse range of international bestsellers! Don’t forget, your Reader (PRS-650) can also play audio books – so some of these titles you may want to download and ‘listen’ to as opposed to reading – that counts too!

To keep the list of books handy – why not also download this list onto your Reader (download the attached PDF file and copy it across), so you can tick them off as you finish them. Remember, with the Reader “Notes” tool and the “On Screen Annotation” ability, you can highlight the ones you liked, or comment on (and within) the ones you want to reference or recommend to your family and friends!

How to safely disconnect the Reader™ from the Computer

WARNING: The Reader device should never be ejected under the following conditions or permanent damage to the Reader device may occur:

NOTES:

A data transfer is in progress
Your computer is accessing the Reader device or compatible memory card inserted in the Reader device.
A file in the Reader device or a compatible memory card in the Reader device is open.

If you are not transferring any data and would like to disconnect your Reader device, click the eject button in the Reader (eBook) Library software. The message on your Reader device will now be USB connected and you can safely remove the connection or continue to charge.

NOTE: If you have already closed the Reader Library software, you can use the Safely Remove Hardware feature of the Windows® operating system to disconnect your Reader device from the computer.

How to redownload previously purchased eBooks

NOTE: A different procedure is available for redownloading eBooks through the Reader Store on the Reader Daily Edition digital book (PRS-900).

Follow the appropriate procedure:

Redownload eBooks:

Open the Reader Library Software.
In the Reader Library window, click the eBook Store link in the left pane.
Log in to your eBook Store account.
On the Reader Store main page, click My Account .
On the Account Overview page, under the My Library , click View and/or Download purchased ebooks
On the My Purchased Content page, you will see a list of all titles that you have purchased. Click to select the book that you want to download and then click on Download Now. The book will be downloaded to your library.

Redownload Periodicals (Newspapers and Magazines):

Open the Reader Library Software.
In the Reader Library window, click the eBook Store link in the left pane.
Log in to your eBook Store account.
On the eBook Store main page, click My Account .
On the Account Overview page, under the My Library , click View and/or Download purchased Periodicals
On the My Purchased Content page, you will see a list of all periodicals that you have purchased. Locate the periodical you wish to download and then click the See Issue List button.
From the individual issue list, locate the issue you wish to download and then click the Download Now button. The periodical will be downloaded to your library.

The Reader Digital Book supports the following file formats:

Unsecured Text: Adobe® PDF, Adobe Digital Editions 1.5 or later, TXT, RTF, EPUB, BBeB (.lrf or .lrx file extension, Non-DRM) Microsoft® Word (Conversion to the Reader-requires Word to be installed on your PC)

NOTE: If Microsoft®Word is installed on your computer, Word files will be automatically converted to RTF files by Reader Library during transfer to your Reader Digital Book or compatible memory card.

DRM Text: EPUB (Adobe DRM-protected content),PDF (Adobe DRM protected)

NOTE: Adobe Digital Editions 1.5 or later and Adobe DRM-protected content requires the installation of the most current version of the eBook Library software which is available through the software and drivers link on this page.

The Reader™ from Sony family of devices have given the electronic book an extremely satisfying physical form. The Readers are similar in size to a slim paperback, yet pack enough memory to hold more than a 1000 eBooks; more than you will ever need when going on vacation or travelling to and from work, school or even spending a day sitting in the local park..

The stylish, metallic Reader Touch Edition™ (PRS-650) comes with a choice of 3 stunning colours; Black, Silver and Red, . The device comes with a 6in display, and weighs a mere 215g.

The Reader Pocket Edition™ (PRS-350) sports a 5” display and with weighing just 155 grams is lighter than most paperbacks. The Pocket Edition is available in Silver, Pink and Blue.

Screen

Sony has made great strides in the quality of the screen. Its Reader comes with the crystal clear E Ink® Pearl display that makes the Reader as comfortable to read from outside in direct sunlight as anywhere else. By eliminating glare, the Reader is just like reading a printed book. Because the Reader doesn’t emit light, you can stare at it for hours without strain.

The addition of a touch screen, combined with the lack of screen glare in direct sunlight, makes a great reading experience.

Touch Screen

The Reader from Sony has an easy to use and very responsive touchscreen for finger and stylus usage and input. Page turns with a swipe of the finger are swift, and tapping text to highlight or to get a definition of the word, using any one of the 12 dictionaries is quick and easy.

The notes and annotation feature also allows users to highlight passages and jot down notes within the text. Impressively, any annotations can be exported as a Word document when the Reader is connected to a PC; a handy feature for any users, especially business or academic.

Reader supports EPUB, PDF, BBeB, Text, RTF, Word, JPEG, PNG, GIF and BMP formats. It also doubles as a music player with support for MP3 and AAC. The Reader from Sony also comes with 'Intelligent zoom for PDF documents', which resizes documents automatically.

Storage

Perhaps the most important feature for an e-reader, aside from the screen quality, is the number of books it can store.

The reader from Sony comes with 2GB of on-board memory. It is capable of storing 1,200 e-books as standard, and the Touch Edition also supports Memory Stick PRO Duo and SD cards, so memory expansion can increase by an additional 32Gb.

Battery life

The Reader from Sony is capable of 10,000 page turns on a single charge, and the battery will last two weeks before needing to be recharged. That amount of page turning is the equivalent of reading “War and Peace” five times on a single charge .

The Reader can only be described as a book lovers portable library, and anyone unsure about reading eBooks will quickly become a convert when they have spent time with these great devices.
